Buy Kiwi Made

The Greens negotiated a Buy Kiwi-Made programme as part of its Co-operation Agreement with the Labour-led Government after the last election. Sue Bradford is the Government spokesperson for this initiative and the Hon Trevor Mallard is the responsible Minister. The Ministry of Economic Development is implementing the programme. The goals of the programme are:

  • Creating awareness of the employment, economic, environmental and social benefits of buying locally made products and services
  • Building brand loyalty for New Zealand made products
  • Reducing imports, especially of consumption goods, helping to reduce New Zealand's trade deficit
  • Helping to increase New Zealand's manufacturing capability and create employment
  • Helping to reduce fuel consumption.

Green Party Co-Leader Rod Donald secured the support for the project during post-election negotiations. Following his death the Green caucus nominated Ms Bradford to take over his position as Government Spokesperson for Buy Kiwi-Made.
