Conservation

The Green Party recognises that our quality of life is underpinned by the health of our unique ecosystems - from mountain tops to seashore, braided river to ocean floor. Ecosystems and species, including ourselves, form an intricate, interconnected web of life which is a treasure in its own right. The web of life contributes to the food we eat and materials we use, the quality of our water and soils, the moderation of climate, and ultimately the ability of our environment to support all life.

What's New

Global plight of mammals plays out in NZ courts

Green Party MP Metiria Turei says the Red List released today by the highly respected International Union for Conservation of Nature shows there have been very few improvements for New Zealand’s marine mammals.

Forestry Policy Summary

The Green Pary will protect, maintain, enhance and increase our indigenous forests. Significantly expand diversity of species in our plantation forests, and manage and use them sustainably. We will also protect soil, water and associated dependent indigenous ecosystems.

Green Light for Community Conservation Fund

Involving the community in conservation is a highly cost effective way to maximise public involvement and support for conservation initiatives. The projects set to be funded will further empower communities to return to a relationship of kaitiakitanga with their natural environment - restoring a local stream is one of the most practical steps we can take to act locally in response to massive problems like climate change and the loss of biodiversity.

Conservation - Policy Summary

Conservation policies and practices must safeguard and enhance ecosystems and all native plants and animal species, especially those that are unique to Aotearoa/New Zealand

Big boost for Conservation in new Green Party policy

A $100 million boost for the Department of Conservation features prominently in the Green Party’s Conservation policy. We are committed to protecting New Zealand’s biodiversity and natural habitat - protecting wetlands, preventing mining and big hydro dams on conservation land, and ensuring ecological protection with renewable energy projects and forestry.

Protect the Mokihinui River

Our native freshwater fish are threatened by over fishing and habitat destruction from pollution and development. Hydro dams cause enormous damage to the habitat of our native fish, most of which migrate up and down rivers to breed. The Mokihinui River has been identified as one of New Zealand's most valuable wild rivers, which is why we want to stop Meridian Energy from building an 85m dam on the Mokihinui River.

Tuna Petition

The House of Representatives must take urgent measures to halt the exploitation of the Pacific region’s tuna fisheries. This includes actively supporting the establishment of marine reserves in the international waters of the Pacific and taking a prominent role in the protection of the Pacific’s tuna fisheries.

Wairau decision will destroy braided river ecosystem

The Green Party is disappointed in the decision of Marlborough District Council to grant resource consents for Trust Power’s hydro scheme on the iconic braided Wairau River.
