Escalating food prices, global food shortages, and food riots are taking place in various parts of the world.  It is crucial that we develop food security strategies in New Zealand to ensure we have enough food to withstand global shortages and rocketing food prices. New Zealand imports about half the food we eat, and our reliance on imports is growing by the year. By continuing our rapid conversion to dairying, we further undermine our food security by making ourselves even more dependent upon imports of basic staple foods. Good food is our best medicine - poor food contributes to ill health and disease. It is important that we improve the quality of the food we eat, and encourage children to develop good eating habits.  Sue Kedgley would welcome the opportunity to discuss these and other food issues with you.
